Wall to wall carpeting must be cleaned often to prevent soiling from penetrating into the lower 80% of the fiber height because there is no protection for the fibers below the 20% surface wear level.
Scotchgarding is a topical teflon protection barrier that is applied at the manufacturing facility. It only “soaks” in the top 20% of the fiber…leaving the lower 80% unprotected. That’s why carpet manufacturers advise frequent steam cleanings. (soiling that reaches the lower 80% of the carpet fiber height is impossible to remove)
The lighter the color, the more frequently it needs to be cleaned.
- Dry Cleaning (solvent cleaning) for sensitive fabrics.
- Wer Cleaning (steam cleaning) for most fabrics.
